Villages

Hellur everyone,

Yesterday we went on a trip to Suresh's (a professor on our trip) in-law's house for dinner. On our way there we made various stops. The first was at a small town for some shopping. That's all I have to say about that stop.

Next we visited a saree weaver. It was crazy how complex and intricate the looms they were using were. It was so impressive to watch them work.

Our our way to the next place we stopped by a rice field. It was really neat to walk around there. You could see water flowing slightly through the field. It was so impressive since there was little/no technology used to farm.

Next we visited a local potter. This was were crowd started to grow a bit. We were in the backyard of his house watching him work and all the people nearby came over. They loved to watch us watching him. People here have an affinity for Americans. They are obsessed with fair skin and fashion. They look up to us and feel that we really have "the good life." I don't want to brag or anything - but the people were going wild for the hair. They loved it. One of the people in the crowd who spoke English said that they all wanted me to know my hair/bandana/beard were way cool. So yeah - I have a bit of a following in India now. haha

Anyway, the potter was awesome. We watched him make the clay and pound all the air bubbles out. Then we watched him use the wheel to make a pot. He had a bamboo rod that he used to get the wheel spinning - it was really impressive. He had it spinning fast enough that it would continue spinning for five minutes or so - long enough for him to complete a pot.

After that we visited a beady house - or a house that hand rolls cigarettes. The crowd grew even larger so it was kind of hard to watch what was going on. Here is a picture of Suri testing one out. You can see the people who are making them as well.

We finally made our way to dinner. They had a theater crew come in and perform a play for us on the rooftop of their home. It was really amazing. The costumes, dance, and music were all great. Afterwards we had dinner and hung out. I was blown away by the hospitality we received there. We had drinks, food, entertainment, and great conversation. I definitely felt very blessed.

Today we going exploring in Chennai.

Weather is here - wish you were beautiful,
Drew
